Jin Shin Jyutsu is a holistic, healing treatment, which uses gentle touch to balance your body, mind and spirit.
Jin Shin Jyutsu is a bit like acupuncture, in that it is based on the idea that our bodies are mapped by paths which carry "qi" (say "chee") or energy. When the energy flows freely, you are balanced and healthy. When the flow of energy is blocked, you experience pain, discomfort, or poor physical or emotional health; you are unbalanced.
Jin Shin Jyutsu helps unblock and keep your energy flowing by tapping into your energy paths via 26 "safety energy locks", points on your body similar to acupoints in acupuncture.
As with acupuncture, Jin Shin Jyutsu is believed to help with a range of conditions: from relieving muscle or joint pain, to helping with breathing problems, sleeping and eating disorders, anxiety, stress and depression.
You will be expected to keep on all your clothes for Jin Shin Jyutsu, but wear loose-fitting comfortable clothes, and not too many layers.
As this is a gentle, non-invasive treatment, you don't need to worry too much about any existing medical conditions or treatments but it's always worth mentioning anything to your therapist, including whether you are, or think you might be might be, pregnant, so that they can put your mind at rest about the procedure.
As with all treatments, it's a good idea to avoid heavy meals and alcohol beforehand.
There are no hard and fast rules about where you should receive Jin Shin Jyutsu, but you will usually be asked to lie on a treatment or massage table. You may be on a quilted mat. In the same way, it doesn't matter where you are, at a spa or on a beach! It should be somewhere quiet, where you can relax.
Before the treatment begins, your therapist will ask you a few questions about your lifestyle and general health. She may also take your pulse. This will tell her about your general health, and what help you need.
Jin Shin Jyutsu does not involve any massage, manipulation or stretches, just simple laying of hands onto the body at particular points.
A Jin Shin Jyutsu session usually lasts for about an hour. You should get a lot out of one session, but you may want to have a course of treatments over several months, to continue the benefits.
If you're going to go for any belief-related treatment, it's really important that you try and open your mind and relax, if you're going to get the benefits. If you're uptight or cynical, you're in the wrong place.
Read up on the treatment. If possible, speak to some people who've had the procedure. This should tell you whether it's liable to suit you.
A session of Jin Shin Jyutsu should leave you feeling calm and relaxed. You may also feel very tired or even emotional. It's a good idea not to plan anything too demanding after the session has finished.
