From Victorian Turkish baths in Harrogate to forest bathing in the Dales, Yorkshire takes its spas seriously.
Harrogate made its name as a spa town, and you can still bathe in that history at Turkish Baths Harrogate, Britain’s most fully restored Victorian Turkish baths, all Islamic-inspired arches and terrazzo floors. Just outside town, Rudding Park Spa spreads over three levels, with a rooftop hydrotherapy infinity-edge pool and Brass Monkey ice baths for the brave.
The country estates do it big here, too. Swinton Country Club & Spa takes its cue from the 20,000-acre Swinton Estate, Three Graces Spa at Grantley Hall pairs a grand house with spa journeys made for each guest, and Forest Spa at Middleton Lodge is inspired by forest bathing, with a heated outdoor pool at its heart. For value and green credentials, Titanic Spa, in a former Huddersfield textile mill, was the UK’s first eco-spa.

With the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors on the doorstep, walkers are spoilt for choice, and the coast from Scarborough to Whitby has fish and chips worth the drive alone. In the cities, York’s medieval walls and the arcades of Leeds make an easy day out before or after the spa.
Climb the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey, then unwind at The Sanctuary at Saltmoore, with the North York Moors in view.
York Minster is two miles from Middlethorpe Hall and Spa, so culture and calm are never far apart.
The Devonshire Arms sits on the Bolton Abbey Estate, with thousands of acres of Dales countryside to explore.
