The South West of England incorporates much beauty: long sandy coastlines, windswept moors, genteel market towns and quintessentially English villages.

The South West is a diamond mine for spa hotels. Bath is a spa destination in the truest sense of the word: enjoy the natural hot springs at the rooftop Thermae Bath Spa with views over the Georgian city. For an opulent weekend of wellness and fine food, hot-foot it to Lucknam Park Hotel and Spa, just a few miles outside of the city.

If it’s seaside spa-ing you’re after, try the hauntingly beautiful Headland Hotel at Newquay, with Atlantic views to die for, or The Alchemist overlooking the three-mile golden stretch of Woolacombe Bay in North Devon. Gaia Spa at Boringdon Hall serves up holistic spa rituals and super-luxe wellness suites to unravel in.

The South West has the longest coastline of any English region

Laying claim to popular visitor destinations Cornwall, Devon, the Cotswolds and Somerset, it’s no surprise that England’s West Country has grand hotels and hideaways in abundance.

Known for its draught cider and clotted cream teas (jam or cream first? You decide), the largest region in England has a little bit of everything: from the wild granite plateau of Dartmoor and postcard-pretty fishing village of Port Isaac, to the sweeping Georgian architecture in Bath and the chocolate box cottages of the Cotswolds.

  • With a reputation as one of the best beaches in the world (not just Cornwall) Kynance Cove on the Lizard Peninsula promises turquoise waters, white sand and serpentine rock stacks.

  • Steeped in myth and legends the town of Glastonbury in Somerset is also reputed to be the burial place of King Arthur and everyone needs to do Glasto at least once.

  • Home to three areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a National Park and World Heritage Coast, Devon is always worth the schlep.
