A small but perfectly formed spa located just outside Winchester City Centre (Scarlet Spy)
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
VOCO Winchester Hotel & Spa is located next to the Planetarium (look out for the distinctive dome) just five minutes from Winchester City Centre, on the edge of the South Downs National Park. Park your car – don’t forget to register your number plate on the reception iPad - and step into the hotel lobby.
This bright and contemporary space has tall ceilings, bold statement lighting, and pops of bright colours and plants. Along with 131 bedrooms, it’s also home to Kitchen 21, whose 21-inch pizzas have earned a sterling reputation. Take the staircase down from the lobby and you’ll find the new ANA Spa, through a door on your right.
WHAT’S ON OFFER?
We were warmly welcomed at the spa reception desk and led to a reserved table in the spacious spa lounge - with its teal and grey palette, white orchids and displays of Germaine de Capuccini products, as well as Jaga wellness shots to try. Our robe, towel and slipper bundle awaited us on the chair, along with consultation forms and menus to pre-order our two-course lunch.
A door to your left leads through to the changing rooms, past the well-equipped modern gym. Decorated in clean, calming neutrals, there are plenty of code-operated lockers, three showers with frosted glass doors and Antipodes Fig & Feijoa amenities, two loos, and a private changing space. Post-spa preening takes place in the vanity area with two round silver mirrors, hairdryers and three footstools to plonk on.
From here, you’ll find the small but beautifully formed spa. Thermal facilities include a large glass-fronted Himalayan Salt Sauna (around 75ºC on our visit) and a white-tiled Crystal Steam Room (scented with head-clearing menthol); cool off in the purple-glowing shower experience in the middle. At one end you’ll find the dark side-by-side bubbly Foot Spas; the other: the sleek hydropool with its bench seats, jet beds and fluted massage cannon. A row of six cushioned loungers lines one wall to relax on between dips.
At the opposite side of the spa lounge, you’ll find the relaxation room
– with six oversized bed loungers with bold pink head rests and butterfly wallpaper. Help yourself to water here. Beside here are the five treatment rooms – all named after types of pearls – Akoya, Tahitian and Hanadama – and, at the very end of the corridor, you’ll find a private Rasul, with space for four.
TELL US ABOUT THE TREATMENTS
We were on the Grace & Favour Spa Experience (4 hours, £150) and tried a Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage (25 minutes) and a De-stress Facial (25 minutes).
My therapist, Imogen, met me in the relaxation room and led me through to one of the five spacious treatment rooms. Once I was comfortable on the heated treatment bed, Imogen commenced the massage - paying close attention to the knots in my shoulders and tightness in my piriformis; I quickly realised I was in good hands.
Turning onto my back, the facial element began with a double cleanse and tone. Imogen applied a Germaine de Capuccini enzyme peel that fizzled satisfyingly on my skin, before a Hydra-Nourishing Mask provided welcome cooling. While this worked its magic, Imogen performed a slow and heavenly pressure point scalp massage leaving me deeply relaxed. Hyaluronic 3D Force serum and vitamin C moisturiser completed the treatment. Imogen then led me to the relaxation room where I found my spa partner horizontal on the oversized lounger beds.
The result? Two serene and glow-y faces.
FOOD FACTS
You can feast en-robe in the spa lounge - a relaxed space which doubles as the spa reception; take a seat on a choice of teal and grey sofas or chairs.
Starters, sandwiches and mains, such as Baked Salmon or Classic Caesar Salad, are on the menu, there’s also a selection of hot drinks, soft drinks, beer wine and fizz. We opted for a refreshing non-alcoholic fruit spritz, complete with playful paper cocktail umbrella.
For our two-course lunch, we tucked into Crispy Calamari to start with lemon aioli and sweet chilli sauce for optimal dipping; for main: two deliciously pink Roast Beef sandwiches with horseradish and rocket.
WE LOVED
The facilities: from the toasty Himalayan Salt Sauna to the sleek and bubbly hydro pool, this petit spa ticks all the right boxes.
The treatment: the facial/massage combo left us feeling serene with glow-y skin.
The staff: everyone we encountered was friendly and welcoming.
