FIRST IMPRESSIONS

A modern spa with a contemporary boutique feel, The Malvern Spa is only a short drive from the M5, with clear signage leading straight into the car park. The striking white and green building has large windows allowing for plenty of natural light; look to the horizon for a glimpse of the Malvern Hills.

WHAT'S ON OFFER?

The spa reception sits in the Grand Salon, a showpiece Italian-style space with stone floors and columns, flooded with light through its glass apex roof. Real plants thrive in the daylight; exposed brickwork adds warmth and Elemis products line the retail area. Complete your consultation form in the quieter host area - here, we sipped mango, ginger and turmeric smoothies, brought by our host Georgia. A personalised welcome card listed our locker number, lunch reservation and treatment times, with a guide to spa etiquette on the back. Look out for the team board of Polaroid photos pegged along the wall.

In the large, bright changing rooms, lockers are assigned and ready with fluffy white robes, towels and flip-flops. Showers have Elemis products, and the vanity area is equipped with hairdryers, straighteners and curling irons, plus cotton pads and buds. There is also a swimwear spin dryer – handy, as the spa does not offer plastic swimwear bags.

The heart of the spa is the indoor-outdoor hydrotherapy pool – the only pool in the UK filled with natural Malvern spring water – heated to a toasty 35 degrees and lined with brown loungers (reservations are limited to 30 minutes, so they free up regularly). Swim through the access tunnel to the outdoor hydrotherapy pool, with its powerful jets, beds and massage stations, then wrap up by the fire pit on the decking area, framed by seasonal hanging baskets.

Six thermal experiences are gathered together in the thermal suite, so it is easy to move from one to the next. The natural wood Kelo Sauna would not look out of place in a Finnish forest; the Herb Sauna glows with pink backlighting, and sits beside the Salt Grotto. The Crystal Steam Room, with an amethyst at its centre, was sadly closed on our visit. Soak tired feet in the three footbaths - we were given Epsom salts on arrival - then cool down in the experience showers, including a mood-lit mist and a bracing bucket drench. Tip: add a hair mask to use in the steam room when you book online.

Here for a few hours? Hire one of three private spa pods for the day, set in the spa garden overlooking the hydro pool. Ours, the Beacon Pod, came with blankets, seasonal cushions, mood lighting and a reed diffuser; connect your phone to the Bluetooth speaker for your own music; a host takes food and drink orders.

Post-treatment, the low-lit relaxation room at the end of the treatment corridor has single and double loungers separated by soft, flowing dividers, each with a blanket folded at the end; candles and aromatherapy diffusers scent the air.

Prefer to work up a sweat? There is a 50-station Technogym gym and a studio with a full timetable of classes, from yoga and Pilates to sound healing and breathwork.

TELL US ABOUT THE TREATMENTS 

We tried the Elemis BIOTEC 2.0 CryO2 Sculpt Facial (60 minutes), included in The Malvern Experience Spa Day (£185 per person).

My therapist, Katie, met me in the waiting area and led me to one of the 14 treatment rooms, styled with Elemis branding. After running through my consultation form, she explained every element of the facial and gently checked whether I needed any adaptations. I settled onto the heated couch, dressed in soft embroidered towelling, and felt instantly cosy and at ease.

The facial focuses on tightening, lifting and plumping the skin, combining hands-on techniques with advanced Elemis technology. Katie began with an ultrasonic rose quartz plate for deep exfoliation, which she explained vibrates around 27,000 times per second. On a previous facial of this kind, the buzzing took me by surprise – but this time, thanks to Katie's calm explanations, I could simply relax into it.

Next came the LED light therapy mask; Katie explained that the red light supports collagen production, while the infrared light has antibacterial and brightening benefits. The highlight was the cryo wand, which reaches sub-zero temperatures to stimulate the skin's natural renewal, used as I wore the Ultra Smart Aqua Infusion Mask to hydrate and firm. The contrast between the cool wand and the warmth of the heated couch made this step feel truly special.

A beautifully relaxing massage of the face, shoulders, neck, décolleté and scalp balanced the high-tech elements perfectly. Katie finished with SPF 50, advised me to avoid the sauna and steam room for 30 minutes and recommended the Elemis Tri-Acid Peel to use at home once a week. She also gave me a list of every product she had used, before escorting me to the relaxation room and offering to adjust the lighting to suit me.

The result? I left feeling pampered, informed and completely relaxed; my complexion stayed bright and glowing for days afterwards.

FOOD FACTS

Spa guests can dine en robe in The Grovewood, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner; The Malvern Experience Spa Day includes a generous £20 allowance each. The restaurant has a warm and intimate feel with mood lighting, exposed wood, cascading plants and gentle background music, while large windows fill the room with daylight. Vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free diets are all catered for.

We opted for the Spa Cheese Steak - char-grilled Angus beef with caramelised onions and melted cheese on ciabatta - with a very generous side of grilled halloumi, served with hot honey and a horiatiki salad. Our spa partner chose the Malvern Salad with crushed Jersey Royals, seasoned to perfection with salt, pepper, butter and herbs. We also shared a side of chicken wings and ribs with a bean sprout and spring onion salad.

This was rounded off with an Elderflower Garden Fizz and a Passion Fruit Velvet from the mocktail menu (£8 each or two for £14). We skipped dessert, but the pavlova delivered to the next table looked stunning.

WE LOVED...

Our Beacon Pod: wrapped in blankets among autumn cushions, with mood lighting, our own music and a gentle reed diffuser, we had a cosy hideaway to return to between experiences. An informative sign about Beacon Hill is a nice nod to local heritage.

The Finnish-style sauna: the log-lined traditional Kelo sauna felt like a Scandinavian cabin. We followed it with a bracing pull of the bucket drench shower and a soak in the foot spas with our Epsom salts.

Katie's expert care: she explained every step of our facial, so we always knew what was coming next. Katie started at The Malvern Spa as an apprentice and stayed on as a full-time therapist after qualifying – the pride in her work shows.
