FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Just a few minutes’ walk from St James’s Park and Victoria stations, J Wellness Circle sits within Taj 51 Buckingham Gate Suites and Residences, one of two hotels housed in a row of eight red-brick townhouses with a history dating back to Tudor England and the court of Queen Elizabeth I.
The spa is located on the lower floor and reached through the original wrought-iron gates and a courtyard centred on a Victorian fountain, beneath the world’s longest sylvan-scenario Shakespearean frieze.
WHAT’S ON OFFER?
We were welcomed by Tenzin, the spa manager, and reception host Leo, and handed a warm, sweet-sour blended tea of basil leaf, jaggery and lime. Reception is a cosy, two-chair space lined with Temple Spa products and Subtle Energies’ bespoke oils, where we filled in our consultation forms.
The petite changing area - suitable for four - has a shower stocked with Temple Spa shampoo, conditioner and shower gel, a WC and vanity area equipped with Dyson hairdryers and straighteners. Help yourself to Temple Spa cleansing balm and calming skin balm, plus shower caps and combs. Robes and bamboo slippers are provided on arrival, and half-size lockers and towels are plentiful.
The thermal suite has four relaxation beds beside a hydration station of iced cucumber water and fresh fruit; we settled in with more herbal tea and a stack of travel and wellness magazines. The low-lit hydrotherapy pool keeps to the spa’s relaxed mood, with a Finnish sauna (70°C on our visit), steam room and experience showers nearby, each with room for up to four guests at a time.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR TREATMENT
We tried the Vishrama – Deep Muscular Experience (2 hours, £300).
Our therapists Chhani and Dulley led us to the double treatment room, with its dark wood tones, light brick walls and its own marble bath - here we sat in tub chairs for a welcome ritual of a rose-petal foot bath.
Inspired by traditional Indian healing practices, Chhani opened the treatment with stretching that lasted far longer than in most UK treatments we’d had before – using, at times, her full body weight to release tension from deep within the muscles. Warm herbal compresses were then used to gently ease fatigue.
Chhani’s hands moved in rhythmic palm and thumb strokes using fragrant signature oil blends, each movement thoughtfully designed to stretch and release tension held deep within the muscles, unravelling knots and restoring a sense of lightness.
She regularly checked the pressure throughout the deep tissue massage, focusing on areas of concern, including my stomach.
The treatment closed with a calming Marma point facial and head massage using the spa’s signature Indian jasmine oil, before the soft chime of manjira cymbals signalled the end.
The Result? We left in a state of complete stillness, harmony and inner balance, as promised. This lingered well into the evening. Our skin: smooth, muscles loose and hair faintly scented with jasmine. We were advised to drink plenty of water, stay out of the sun and leave the oils on overnight for full effect.
FOOD FACTS
TH@51, the hotel’s restaurant and bar, sits on the ground floor; in summer, tables spill into the peaceful courtyard around the fountain. The globally inspired menu favours sharing plates – we opted for salt and pepper squid on a bed of roast peppers (the stand-out dish), halloumi and avocado Caesar salad, a raw mango Goi Con, coleslaw with passionfruit mayo and mint, and Cajun fries, all generously portioned.
A glass of Château Gairoird Organic Rosé each, alongside a large bottle of sparkling water, carried us through a long, late lunch – with just enough room left for a vibrant mango cheesecake and an apple mousse with a cinnamon centre.
WE LOVED…
Authentically Ayurvedic throughout: basil-leaf welcome tea, India-trained therapists, and details grounded in genuine Indian healing tradition rather than generic spa tropes.
The attention to detail: areas flagged at consultation were worked through with real care across the full two hours; the therapist used her full body weight, knees and feet to deliver controlled deep tissue compression and assisted stretches.
The jasmine facial oil: the Marma point massage and its lingering scent made for our favourite moment of the whole ritual.
