First impressions

First Impressions

Imagine Spa at Blofield Heath is a small day spa set on Willow Farm, just a 20-minute drive from central Norwich. The spa itself is set in a redbrick building with horses in the paddock next door. The spa packs a lot of facilities into a small space with plenty of relaxation areas and some quirky touches.

On offer

What's on offer?

We were warmly greeted in the welcoming reception area by a lady in a smart brown uniform, who handed us a locker key and showed us through to changing room number 1 (there is a second changing facility and also one for disabled guests). Be sure to look up and admire the cascading glass ceiling ornament on your way through.

The changing rooms are on the smaller size with 20 dark wood, L-shaped lockers along one wall containing white towels, robes and slippers. Use one of the benches to change or nip into the private changing room opposite the lockers. Your loo and showers are around the corner, the latter containing Scottish Fine Soap combined hair and body shampoo and Duck Island conditioner. Everything was clean and tidy on our visit. There’s also a small vanity bar with a hairdryer, tissues, hand wash and moisturiser near the entrance, as well as swim suit bags (but no spin dryer).

Back at reception, we were shown through to a pre-waiting area -- with its deep purple and chocolate brown chaise longs and chairs -- to complete consultation forms, choose a treatment, pre-order lunch and sip glass of pink fizz. At Imagine Spa you can book the treatment time but not choose you treatment until the day -- great if you want something tailored to your mood.

The thermal suite is through the changing rooms. Aquamarine mosaic tiles dominate the area, giving a fresh, modern feel, while floor-to-ceiling windows afford views of the spa garden, with a pond and wooden heated pods.

We began our spa journey in the salt grotto steam room which would comfortably seat six to eight people. This was gorgeously steamy on our visit, the salt helped to clear my lungs of a winter cold. Cool down at the ice fountain afterwards or try the experience shower, both backed by creamy mosaic tiles. We loved the subtle smell of jasmine in the cooler aroma steam room, also seating between six and eight.

In the centre of the room is a circular hydro pool comfortably seating six spa-goers; the hot bubbly water was delicious after a cool shower.

You can also book use of the serail mud chamber during your spa day for a fee. We applied brown, chocolate-scented mud to our bodies and white, vanilla-scented mud to our faces before being enveloped in steam. After 45 minutes, jets above our heads automatically came on to wash the mud off. My skin felt very soft afterwards.

The spa garden can be accessed via a door by the hydro pool. There are two heated garden pods to relax in, each decked in Moroccan-style sofas and furnishings with good choice of magazines to read and iced water to sip. Behind the pods is a spa sensory garden, resplendent with fragrant herbs and plants (some edible). Wooden benches are dotted around if you want to take a pew. Some of the produce used in the kitchen is grown here.

The dark relaxation room is by the changing rooms, with three lie-flat loungers, a water fountain, a feature fire, piles of magazines and a glass cabinet selling a wide variety of spa products.

Imagine Spa at Blofield Heath also has a hammam, a dry flotation bed and a mani/pedi area.

We enjoyed a Sensory Body Massage with hot stones (30 minutes, £36) followed by a Prescriptive Discovery Facial (30 minutes, £35).

My therapist, Amy, fetched me from one of the wooden pods and led me to one of five spacious treatment rooms with a separate shower and purple and brown furnishings. Amy then left the room so I could de-robe and get comfortable on the warm treatment bed.

Amy began the Sensory Body Massage with a quick foot massage before drizzling oil onto my back and shoulders. She massaged the oil across my torso and introduced hot stones which felt like a warm hug, though they were a little bit too hot on first application. The next 30 minutes was a pleasant blur of massage and targeted heat. Amy checked the pressure and temperature several times during the treatment.

Amy began the Babor facial by asking about my skin concerns (dehydrated) and daily facial routine (face wash; moisturiser). Determining that my skin needed a good clean, she performed a double cleanse to clear my pores. Amy followed this with an exfoliating scrub, which left my skin silky smooth.

The face massage was delightfully thorough; Amy encouraged my cheeks to flush with health and used a rich face cream and dots of eye cream around my eye sockets to complete the treatment. I left the room feeling relaxed and de-stressed with super soft skin.

Imagine Spa at Blofield Heath offers a good range of scrubs, wraps and massages as well as hot stones and Lava shells, St Tropez spray tans and manicures/pedicures by Jessica Nails. The menu also features treatments for couples, men and mums-to-be. There are signature treatments, too, that change with the seasons.

Food facts

Food Facts

Spa goers can eat lunch in their robes in the small restaurant next to the kitchen or, provided one is available, ask to enjoy a slice of cake or light bite in one of the spa pods in the garden.

In the restaurant, guests can choose from a selection of starters, mains and desserts: there are five choices of each, including options for vegetarians and those who are gluten-free. If you’re visiting for a special occasion, order the afternoon tea -- as pretty as it is tasty.

Our chicken Caesar salad was generously portioned and we loved our salmon main, which was flaky with a crispy skin, and served with a minted potato stack and a red pepper and tomato jus. Too full for dessert, our lovely spa assistant asked if we would like to take some raisin and glacier cherry scones home with us (yes please).

We loved / we didn't love

We loved / we didn't love

We loved

The garden pods: These are a great idea and complement the outdoor space perfectly.

The staff: Nothing is too much trouble for the spa staff -- we loved that we could take dessert home with us.

We didn’t love

The soggy slippers: We’d prefer flip-flops please.

The lack of fresh towels: A shelf of clean towels to help yourself to would be a welcome addition.

What bubble rating did you give this spa?

What bubble rating did you give this spa?

We awarded Imagine Spa at Blofield Heath a Good Spa Guide Bubble Rating of Four Bubbles. This is a lovely little spa with a modern design and some inventive touches. A hydro pool or hot tub in place of the pond outside would make it extra special.

Stylish Spy visited in December 2017 and awarded it 4 Bubbles.
