Aqua Sana Woburn Forest is found in the heart of the Center Parcs holiday village. The modern, glass and timber building takes over 7,600 square metres: that’s a lot of spa! The spa opened in 2014 and is must visit for spa lovers staying at the village, or locals who want to go for the day.
If you are visiting for the day, follow the road signs from the village reception to the spa. You can also park next door by the hotel reception.
Walk into the spa, and you’ll find the reception desk and a big retail area. We checked in, confirmed our treatment times and had a tour of the spa – with a spa this big we needed some help to get our bearings!
Help yourself to the robes and towels outside of the changing rooms, if you forget to bring your own flip flops you’ll need to buy some from reception.
The changing rooms are vast, with four changing areas and a large white, leather stool in the centre to sit on. The lockers are big with room to store belongings and hang clothes; a wristband locks the locker, so pins or keys required! There are two dressing tables with hairdryers, showers stocked with Aqua Sana amenities but surprisingly no private changing cubicle.
When you’re en robe, head up the grand, spiral staircase and into the thermal area.
All Center Parcs spas have a “World of Spa” thermal area. Aqua Sana Woburn Forest is unique in that it has six spas within the one spa. You can visit the Blossom Spa, Fire and Ice Spa, Salt Spa, Mineral and Gemstone Spa, Sensory Spa or the Herbal Spa. Each has a series of hot and cold experience rooms. As you enter the spa, tucked away behind a large screen are space-age-looking, large, white reflexology foot baths with changing primary-coloured lights.
We began in the ‘Blossom Spa’ which has tepidarium beds, experience showers and mild steam inhalation rooms are a great introduction to your heat journey. The ‘Herbal Spa’ was our personal favourite, not too mild or too hot and each sauna and steam room had a different herbal aroma.
The "Fire and Ice Spa" is great if you like extreme temperatures. The super-hot lava-volcano sauna has mesmeric images of red-hot lava pouring and bubbling from a volcano on the walls, and a chilling ice room to step into afterwards and cool down.
The fire relaxation room is one of the highlights of Aqua Sana Woburn, with loungers facing a wall-length fire feature; a wonderful place to rest before continuing your spa journey.
A large spiral staircase takes you downstairs to three more self-contained spa experiences. The "Salt Spa" is designed to help you detox. The Salt Spa has a sauna, a salt-inhalation room with a row of white loungers, a steam room, and a relaxation room.
The "Mineral and Gemstone Spa" is designed to help you relax and recharge. A mineral steam, a crystal steam, and a mineral relaxation room have little pods into which you can retreat.
Last but not least is the "Sensory Spa". This spa has an aqua-meditation room with a vast screen showing colourful moving images. The sensory-experience room runs on a 25-minute cycle during which you experience all four seasons. The temperature changes through the seasons and "rain", "fog" and "sunshine" fill the room in succession.
On the lower level there are also waterbeds with plenty of blankets for deep relaxation or possibly taking a little snooze.
The Aqua Sana Woburn Forest Spa feels spacious and light throughout, with many floor-to-ceiling glass walls giving beautiful views of the forest.
The hydrotherapy infinity pool is outside with views of the forest. There are swan neck pipes, bubbles by the seating at the side and room to swim a short length. The temperature was a little cooler than we would have liked but it was wonderful to be outside. If the weather is good, you can relax on the terrace loungers next to the pool.
The treatment area is on the first floor and, like everything at Aqua Sana Woburn, it is huge. There are 22 treatment rooms and an express treatment and manicure area.
We had the Elemis Brighten and Glow treatment (£50 minutes, £79).
My therapist, Laura, came to meet me in the treatment lounge. She gave me a consultation form to complete before showing me to the treatment room.
Laura asked me some brief questions about my skin and where my areas of tension were before leaving me to get comfortable, face down on the treatment bed. The treatment began with a hot stone back massage; the stones were smooth and a wonderful hot temperature. Laura found my areas of tension and worked to ease some of my tight muscles.
Laura asked me to turn over and started a short facial. She cleansed my skin and then applied an exfoliator, removing the product with hot face towels. Laura massaged my face, neck and shoulders and applied a moisturiser to my skin.
This treatment gives the best of both worlds, with a relaxing back massage and a facial to treat your skin. Afterwards I felt relaxed and my skin was smooth and hydrated.
At the end of the treatment I had the choice of two relaxation rooms, light with chairs or dark with loungers. Both would seat around twenty people. I chose to relax on a lounger in the dark room after helping myself to an herbal tea.
As well as facials by Decléor and Elemis, you can also try body treatments such as brushing, serail mud, and dry floatation, as well as a variety of massages and beauty finishing touches such as make-up, manicures and pedicures. There are treatments specifically for men and for mums-to-be.
The Vitalé Café Bar on the upper level of Aqua Sana Woburn is a huge space that would comfortably sit 100 diners. The floor-to-ceiling windows at the far end lead out onto a balcony where there is space for another 100 outside. The view onto the forest is wonderful.
If you visit on a spa day, you will have a drink and a pastry on arrival. For lunch, you can choose a drink and one item from the lunch menu. Choices include a range of sandwiches, pastas and salads – the food is well presented and tasty.
The sheer amount of spa facilities on offer – there really is something for everyone and although the spa was busy, we always found somewhere to relax and didn’t have to wait to use anything.
We didn’t love:
The lack of privacy in the changing rooms – a private changing cubicle would be a welcome addition.
Social spa goers – This is the ideal space to spa and catch up with friends without the fear of disturbing anyone.
Newbies – This spa has everything, if you are new to spa-ing it could be the perfect introduction.
Day visitors – if you live near to Woburn we suggest visiting for a spa day.
We gave Aqua Sana Woburn a Good Spa Guide rating of 5 bubbles. Aqua Sana Woburn is a cleverly designed spa with so much to offer. The customer service is excellent and the spa has a warm and friendly feel.
Supreme Spy visited in October 2015 and awarded it 5 Bubbles
