First impressions

First Impressions

Set in the heart of the Bedfordshire countryside, Aqua Sana is part of Center Parcs Woburn Forest. The spa is in the centre of the village, and is well sign-posted with its own car park. The building is an attractive blend of glass and timber, surrounded by the forest.

On offer

What's on offer?

Reception at Aqua Sana Woburn Forest is light and bright with glass walls looking out over the forest. There's a small collection of sofas and a huge retail area to stock up on spa-goodies. Staff warmly welcomed us, handed us a locker key and guided us to the changing rooms. The spa assistant gave us a robe and towel.

The changing rooms are spacious and modern, with stone-effect tiled flooring and wooden-panel-fronted lockers. The space is separated into four areas so you never feel over-exposed. At the centre of each area is a large brown leather stool surrounded by lockers. The three vanity stations are equipped with hairdryers, large mirrors and brown leather seats. The showers are at one end of the changing room, each with shampoo, conditioner and body wash. Both showers and bathrooms were immaculately clean on our visit.

Spanning two floors, Aqua Sana offers six spa areas designed to take you on a sensory journey. Try the Fire and Ice, Blossom, Herbal, Sensory, Mineral and Gemstone or Salt Spas. Each has a selection of saunas, steam rooms, showers and sensory experience rooms. The Blossom, Herbal and Fire and Ice spa are upstairs; a spiral staircase takes you down to the Sensory, Mineral and Gemstone, and Salt Spas.

We began our journey at the reflexology foot spas before exploring the heat experiences. We started at the mild Blossom Spa which has tepidarium beds, experience showers and mild steam inhalation rooms.

Our favourites were the Herbal Spa with a sauna and steam room with different herbal aroma and the Mineral and Gemstone Spa with a mineral steam room and crystal steam room.

The Fire and Ice Spa is great if you like extreme temperatures. The super-hot lava-volcano sauna has mesmeric images of red-hot lava pouring and bubbling from a volcano on the walls. Step into the chilling ice room afterwards to cool down.

Aqua Sana also has a fabulous outdoor hydrotherapy pool overlooking the forest, with three hydrotherapy jets. You can swim outside or walk via a large terrace with lots of sun loungers.

Several relaxation rooms contain everything from loungers to water beds. The fire relaxation room is one of the highlights with loungers facing a wall-length fire feature; a wonderful place to rest before continuing your spa journey.

We had the Elemis Superfood Facial (25 minutes, £45).

Nantiya, my therapist, collected me from the reception area and led me to a low-lit treatment room with stylish wooden floors.

In order to personalise the treatment, Nantiya enquired about my normal skincare routine and areas of concern. She thoroughly cleansed my skin and applied a pineapple and papaya peel, which smelled divine and tingled nicely. She left it on for a few minutes then removed it with warm, damp cloths.

Next up was the Elemis Superfood Face Mask which was luxuriously thick and cooling. While it dried, Nanitya performed a relaxing head massage. She peeled off the mask, massaged in a facial oil, then applied face and eye cream.

My skin felt soft and, on closer examination in a mirror, looked clear and fresh, with a genuine glow.

Aqua Sana Woburn Forest offers everything from massages and rejuvenating facials, to sculpting wraps and nourishing scrubs. Also on the menu are reflexology, treatments for men and mums-to-be, and beauty finishing touches such as manicures, pedicures and brow treatments.

Food facts

Food Facts

If you visit for a spa day, you eat lunch in Café Vitale which overlooks the forest. Choose from a selection of cold and hot dishes such as salads, soups, paninis, wraps and pasta dishes. We enjoyed a brie and spinach panini and a glass of Prosecco on the outside balcony. Everyone dined in their robes.

We also splurged on the café's afternoon "tea for two" offer: any slice of cake or dessert plus tea or coffee. The carrot cake and raspberry tart were delicious.

We loved / we didn't love

We loved

The dedicated places to leave your glasses: A practical touch for people entering the steam room.

The volume of thermal experiences: Allow yourself plenty of time to enjoy them all.

The outdoor pool: With forest views, it makes a very relaxing dip.

We didn't love

How crowded the spa was: We were elbow-to-elbow with other guests in the changing rooms and some of the thermal rooms.

The insufficient number of hooks: There was nowhere to hang towels before entering many of the thermal rooms.

Groups of friends and mothers and daughters: Aqua Sana Woburn Forest has plenty of places to sit and chat between pampering, and the wide choice of experience rooms will keep you entertained all day.

What bubble rating did you give this spa?

What bubble rating did you give this spa?

We awarded Aqua Sana Woburn Forest a Good Spa Guide rating of 5 bubbles. Aqua Sana is a large spa with plenty of facilities and treatments, but it can get crowded. A few things were broken on our visit, including one of the foot spas and one of the hydrotherapy jets in the outdoor pool. That said, Aqua Sana Woburn offers good-value spa days in a friendly and fun environment.

Serene Spy visited in April 2017 and awarded it 5 Bubbles.

What others are saying

"Severely overcrowded when we went. Pool partially closed for tiling work with no warning when we booked- we had to dart across decking in the rain to get to a lukewarm infinity pool overlooking a road- overall impression was not exactly relaxing or "luxury". One spa patron was on his laptop with sound blasting while we were in one lounge area, saunas smelt (not of essential oils either!). Really disappointed, ended up complaining and getting a full refund. Would not recommend at all!"

"I absolutely love it here! I visit once every couple of months and never get bored. It's probably one of my favourite spa's just because of the sheer number of different rooms. I agree the pool is slightly too cool. Its fine if you are swimming but this is only possible on a quiet day as there is not much space and it can get busy. There is and has always been a private changing area in the changing rooms but it could have been missed as it is tucked away in the corner on the right hand side when you enter the room. Fresh towels are available in two locations and if you need a fresh robe you can get one easily by asking one of the many helpful spa assistants dotted around the area. I also love the fact that iced towels, infused water and fresh green apples are available to grab anytime you need a refresh or you get a bit peckish. "

"I visited this spa with my boyfriend a week or so ago and was surprised by the number of rooms and experiences on offer. I found the water in the pool quite cool when outside, but I don't agree it was uncomfortable at all. If it was a few degrees warmer it would have been perfect. Overall we were very happy with our experience. We found the comfy outside seats very pleasant, especially looking out at the forest. I found the whole spa to be spotlessly clean. We booked a full day ticket and went at around 3, we didn't manage to go into every experience room as we were just taking our time and there were so many to enjoy. A couple of things I think could've been better, one was having to walk all the way down to the spa entrance to get another robe. I found mine got increasingly damp during the day and it would have been nice to have another robe more readily available, especially when you're there for the whole day. Also one of the mineral spas had no treatment balm outside, we looked but couldn't see any so skipped that room. Saying this, I would definately recommend this spa. "

"Fantastic spa, I recommend this spa highly, there is so much to do and I came out feeling so relaxed, nothing else compares. Agree about the food portions, but I just called up and booked a restaurant within center parcs before I arrived, which I had done at Elvedon. (as I didn't stay at center parcs, you can still reserve at a restaurant there) I was a fan of the Aqua Sana at Elvedon Center Parcs also before this one."

"Awful spa. Cold. The "hydrotherapy" pool is only heated to 29 degrees - not warm enough to feel comfortable outside. Messy dirty changing rooms too. Avoid this place, don't waste your money and go to Wyboston Lakes instead."
