Located in the heart of the Yorkshire countryside, the new £4.5m Yorkshire Spa Retreat has been created around a unique wild swim pond; take a dip and reconnect with the natural world while breathing in the fresh Yorkshire air. Yorkshire Spa Retreat sits on Gale Lane in Nawton - a short drive from York - and is easy to find thanks to clear signage from the main A-road.
The approach winds through a smartly kept development of upmarket holiday homes, all sharing the same design. Two disabled parking bays sit right by the entrance, and parking throughout is complimentary. The spa itself is housed in a separate contemporary luxury lodge in the middle of the grounds.
WHAT’S ON OFFER?
We were welcomed at reception by Cass and Niamh, who talked us through consultation forms and pre-selected our bathing experience. Niamh handed us a canvas bag containing water bottles and flip-flops before taking us on a tour of the facilities.
The reception's retail display was understated, with Tribe 517 products shown against natural, neutral tones.
The changing rooms are reached via a key-coded door and, while compact (around 80 half-height lockers), felt calm and well managed throughout our visit. There's one private changing cubicle, three toilets and four shower cubicles - all spotless and fully stocked on our visit.
The vanity area is generously equipped with GHD straighteners, quality hairdryers, hair oil and cotton buds, alongside Tribe 517 shampoo, conditioner and body wash in the showers. Eco-friendly costume bags are provided for wet swimwear. Having our name pre-displayed on our locker was a small but well-judged personal touch.
Outside of the Relaxation Dome, four treatment rooms and the Dome Restaurant, the spa's facilities sit entirely outdoors, built around a wildflower-planted landscape rather than simply placed within it. The centrepiece is the natural swimming pond, roughly 400m² in total with a dedicated 13m x 4.5m swimming area - its water sitting at a cool 21°C on our visit (perfect for our visit during one of the UK’s hottest summers).
Floating among water lilies, we watched newts, water snails, wagtails and swifts going about their business, with bumblebees and butterflies busy in the planting beyond. There are no sweeping panoramic views here; the immediate landscape of trees and gardens is the view; it lends the whole outdoor area a private, unhurried feel even when the spa gets steadily busy.
Elsewhere outdoors, there’s a Himalayan Salt Sauna (which ran hot on our visit) and a Herbal Steam Room (with a robust heat); both sitting behind attractive glass doors and seating 10 guests with ease.
The spa’s huge Herbal lounge could easily accommodate 14-16 guests; linger here long enough for the buckets above to release herbal-infused oiled steam into the room.
The hydrotherapy pool and outdoor hot tub offer the more active thermal experiences, while sunbeds, gazebos and individual chair domes are scattered generously around the grounds for guests wanting their own private spot.
Inside, the Relaxation Dome is built predominantly from wood and natural materials, with beaded chandeliers above adding a touch of glamour without disturbing the natural feel. Six dedicated relaxation beds sit alongside a separate area of low sofas and chairs for a more sociable spot to drift off. Help yourself to filtered water and magazines; a carefully paced soundtrack of background music rounds the space off nicely.
We tried the Yorkshire Well Being massage using Tribe 517 products (60 minutes, £125 if booked separately, or included within the £189 day package).
My therapist, Ashton, led me to one of the spa's four treatment rooms (the couples’ room) and talked me through the pressure on offer (from light to medium) before leaving me to get comfortable on the bed, lying face down.
The treatment opened with warmth applied to the head and feet, followed by heated pouches positioned at three points along the spine. Working clockwise, rather than in a conventional massage sequence, Ashton moved methodically up the left side of my body - from foot to leg, to back to arm - before spending real time on my neck and shoulders, where cycling had left plenty of tension to work through.
The sequence continued down the right-hand side before finishing at both feet and the head, with a dusting of magnesium applied to the feet and an orange balm-soaked wrist ribbon added as a final scented touch. A gentle chime signalled the end of the treatment, and we were brought back with chilled water, lemon tea and a macaron - a nice, unhurried way to return to the world rather than being sent straight back out.
Lunch can be enjoyed en robe at the Dome Restaurant, a cool, immaculately kept space even on a hot day, with views out across the spa grounds and the natural pond. An olive tree anchors the centre of the room, and the bar features a Himalayan salt installation echoing the spa's own salt sauna.
The restaurant is cleverly zoned for spa and local guests, with a mix of lounge seating, indoor and outdoor tables and even table tennis for anyone lingering after their meal.
Our day package included two courses and two glasses of Prosecco, served nicely chilled. For starters, our Panko Calamari arrived as three neatly crumbed, tender pieces with a fresh salad and light lemon mayonnaise, while our Dome Caesar Salad - a twist on the classic, minus anchovies - came with chargrilled chicken, smoked bacon, baby gem and croutons, plus a side of well-cooked truffle fries. For dessert, the gluten-free Raspberry Pavlova was a pretty plate of meringue, fresh berries, edible flowers and a not-too-sweet Chantilly cream. We paired it all with a glass of Albariño from Rías Baixas in Spain, well priced at £11.50 per glass.
Vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free requirements are all clearly catered for on the menu.
The natural swimming pond: swimming among water lilies while newts, water snails, wagtails and swifts went about their day made this feel like far more than an outdoor pool.
Our treatment: this unconventional, clockwise massage - with heat, scent and magnesium woven through – encouraged us to drift off partway through.
The little touches: our name on the locker door; the welcome pack, the chilled lemon tea and the macaron after treatment… small details that add up to a considered, unhurried day.
