First impressions

First Impressions

Low Wood Bay Resort and Spa is situated right on the shores of Windermere in the Lake District. Originally a farmhouse, the hotel, health club and spa have been seamlessly extended to make the most of the stunning views.

On offer

What's on offer?

From the hotel you take a long flight of wooden stairs (or the lift) down into the spa reception which has warm-hued wooden floors, soft armchairs and shelves of products on the walls. A delicious display of cakes show that here they understand that a spa day is a treat in all sense of the word. Our spa host took us on a guided tour of the spa, answering our questions on the way.

We were given soft and generously cut robes and flip flops and taken to the well-equipped changing rooms. The lockers have hangers and close with the use of a wrist band. The vanity area has a good sized, well-lit mirror and two hair dryers. The showers have ESPA shampoo and conditioner, and hair straighteners are available at reception so there’s plenty of opportunity to preen post-spa.

The spa at Low Wood Bay is built into a hillside overlooking the lake. The outdoor pool, two hot tubs and the sauna are built at various levels with steps in-between. The outdoor sauna is perched at the top and must have the best views of any sauna in the UK. Huge panoramic windows offer views of the Lakeland, while you gently roast in the warmth - perfect for a winter’s day when the mountains opposite are capped with snow.

Indoors there is an infinity pool with bubble massage jets and a warm hydrotherapy pool. The sauna lounge has wooden swing seats and is warm, but cool enough to stay in for 20 minutes or so. A truly hot steam room, a hot salt sauna and two showers complete the indoor section.

The heat experiences are part of a three-hour thermal journey which means there is a maximum of 25 people in the spa at any time. This makes it feel quite intimate and the spa assistant works to collect damp towels and offer new ones, bring drinks and cakes and generally make sure everyone feels well looked after.

If you want even more peace and quiet book into the Hideaway. Three hours here offers a huge silver bath for two (already drawn and waiting for you), an area where you can lie back on wheat filled cushions and watch the clouds drifting over the lake, and two treatment beds. It feels delightfully private.

Post-treatment, head to the relaxation room where huge windows give views out over the lakes, and the soft grey recliners all have colourful throws on them. Silvery grey curtains between some of the beds allow for extra privacy or to reduce the brightness if you fancy a snooze. There are bowls of fruit to help yourself to, flavoured waters to try, and you can order hot and cold drinks, champagne and cake from the ‘spa tenders’.

Tell us about the treatments

I had the ESPA Lift and Firm facial (90 minutes, £105).

Kiera, my therapist, began by using warm damp towels on my feet to help me relax into the treatment. She cleansed my face and neck and then used a bright visual inspection lamp to assess the condition of my skin. Keira was charmingly polite saying how lovely and soft my skin is and that I obviously take good care of it. She then explained that she could see some slight dehydration on my cheeks and around my eyes, so she would focus the gentle exfoliation on those areas.

Kiera exfoliated and then applied a brightening face mask, massaging my hands and arms while it worked it’s magic on my skin. She removed the mask, cleansed again and applied moisturisers to my face, eyes and lips to finish the treatment.

The ESPA products were gentle but effective. At the end of the treatment I was so relaxed that it was a struggle to wake up and get off the warm and supportive bed.   My skin was noticeably brighter and clearer, and my jawline looked much firmer.

We had also booked in for a Sauna Meister session.

Held in the large sauna overlooking Windermere the session was led by Ashley who greeted the 15 or so people into the hot sauna and suggested we all sit on small towels. She then took us on a sensory forest journey. She added a block of scented ice to the hot coals, poured a scoop of water on it and then broke the ice with a sharp tap. As she wafted the aroma around the sauna with a towel, a wave of vibrant lemon scent reached us. The next block of ice had pine flavourings from local pine trees and it was like walking through a warm forest. Ashley then added a block of peppermint ice to the hot coals as an uplifting finale. The whole process only took 10 minutes, but we were all aware of the way our sense of smell allowed us to take that forest journey.

The Spa at low Wood Bay offers facials, massages including hot stone massages, scrubs and wraps and, of course, manicures and pedicures. They also have therapists trained (by Jennifer Young and Beauty Despite Cancer) to treat anyone recovering from cancer and other long-term illness.

Food facts

Food Facts

Spa guests eat at the Blue Smoke on the Bay restaurant which serves lunch, afternoon tea and dinner with food cooked on a three-metre long double wood fired grill. It’s fun to watch food being cooked here on a range of local woods. The aromas of each wood add to the flavour of the food and the cooking method keeps meat and fish crisp on the outside but juicy inside. We had  grilled  salmon and grilled pork for our evening meal and the next day we had afternoon tea once our treatments finished. Finger sandwiches, scones and more of those tempting cakes along with a cup of camomile tea. The perfect end to a spa day!

Although you have to leave the spa to get to the restaurant you can dine in your robe.

We loved / we didn't love

We loved / we didn't love

We loved

The views, the outside heat facilities and oh did I say…the views.

We also loved the fact that the spa feels so intimate and the customer service is good.

Staying in the stylish Winander Club. You are greeted by a host with a glass of fizz, your luggage is taken to your room and breakfast is served in the lake-view breakfast room.

We didn’t love

The steps in the outdoor areas of the spa. They are wide and have good handrails to make things easier, but if you have significant mobility problems you may find using the outdoor area difficult.

What others are saying

"Wonderful spa & had a lovely day. Areas for improvement are:- 1) Desperately need water stations in the internal thermal spa & external spa. Not safe when you’re body temperature is rising to a degree that causes dehydration & you have to walk to relaxation lounge for a drink. 2) Music in all communal areas does not suit the spa & is not calming 3) Phones should be banned from the relaxation room! 4) should not be allowed in thermal area until health questionnaire completed. The above is purely constructive & did not affect our perfect day. Can’t wait to come back. "

"I visited the Low Wood Spa with my daughter last week as a 40th birthday present for her and a treat for me :) The facilities and decor immediately struck us as very relaxing and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. We each had a top to toe birch and berry massage which was excellent and we both almost fell asleep at the end. I could have continued with the massage all day...it was great! Nice touch to be able to make the two treatment rooms into one and loved the hot towels. Loved the relaxing lounge area (with the drinks and little cakes) which we found difficult to tear ourselves away from to enjoy the indoor/outdoor spa experience. Woulsd be happy to visit again."

"We had a lovely spa day at The Low Wood. The staff were all very professional and made us feel very welcome . The relaxation area is perfect and the drinks and cakes provided are a lovely touch - the gluten free chocolate brownie was delicious. We had booked the Couples Hideaway package and the room was fabulous, we could have spent the whole day in there! We had a fabulous Sunday Lunch in the Blue Smoke with a glass of prosecco which was just perfect. "

"This is without doubt the best spa I’ve ever been to. It was sparklingly clean with wonderful facilities and very friendly and welcoming staff. The products used in my 60 minute facial felt and smelt amazing and Becky who completed my treatment was not only lovely but also exceedingly good at her job. I can’t wait to go back."
